In-Vitro Fertilization - Embryo Transfer
(IVF-ET)
IVF-ET is a widely accepted treatment for
infertile couples that has been used worldwide since the early
1980s, with the first IVF baby born in England in 1978. IVF-ET involves the removal of human eggs, fertilization of
the eggs in the laboratory, and replacement of the fertilized
eggs (embryos) directly through the cervix into the uterine
cavity. The presence of functioning fallopian tubes is not a
requirement for IVF-ET and this technique was initially
designed for couples with tubal factor infertility. IVF-ET is
now also used for patients with endometriosis, unexplained
infertility, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and male factor
infertility.
The staff at FSAC has had extensive training and
success with IVF-ET. Their research and clinical contributions
to advances in IVF-ET technologies have improved its successful use today.
Our Laboratory Director,
Dr. Man Li, is an internationally recognized expert in IVF
Laboratory Technology and helped pioneer some of the
revolutionary IVF treatments available today, including
ICSI.
She was
among the first scientists performing PGD and using ICSI to
treat male factor infertility in China, beginning in 1994.
She is an acknowledged expert in IVF embryo culture and
embryo micromanipulation, including ICSI, embryo biopsy, and
PGD. Dr. Li has been honored on several occasions by
serving as a faculty member for embryo biopsy and PGD
training courses for embryologists throughout the United
States.
Starting the IVF Cycle
When you decide to start an IVF cycle, your nurse or physician will give you information regarding the type of ovulation medication to be used. It is important to adhere to your protocol strictly, and contact
our office if you have any questions regarding the medication or instructions. The medications need to be taken daily, and on time. If a cycle is to be started, it is important to contact our office once your menses begin, no later than day 2 or day 3.
