In-Vitro Fertilization - Embryo Transfer
(IVF-ET)
STEP 2 - EGG COLLECTION
Until about 1987, eggs were collected by laparoscopy which required a general anesthesia. Today, the eggs are collected by transvaginal ultrasound needle-guided aspiration. At FSAC, this is done in the safety and convenience of our on-site IVF Laboratory Facility under conscious sedation anesthesia, without requiring hospitalization.
This technique uses a small needle guide which runs right alongside the transvaginal ultrasound probe. A needle is then carefully placed through the vagina into the follicle, and the egg and the follicle fluid are gently removed by "follicle
aspiration." Once the aspiration is performed, the embryologist will then search the follicle fluid for eggs. The transvaginal
egg retrieval takes approximately 15 minutes.
