Male Infertility
In approximately 40 percent of cases, the reason a couple cannot conceive is to
due male factor infertility. It is important that both partners
participate in fertility testing early in the process so that
your doctor can make the most accurate diagnosis and you can begin treatment in a timely
manner.
A male infertility workup generally includes
taking a medical and sexual history, physical examination,
semen analysis to determine the number, shape and motility of
the sperm, and blood tests to check certain hormone levels.
Treatments for male infertility may include vasectomy reversal, microsurgical repair of obstructions,
surgical repair of varicocele or other anatomical
abnormalities, and microsurgical aspiration
procedures to remove sperm directly from the testicles or
epididymis to be used in in-vitro fertilization (PESA or TESA).
Some male infertility testing and treatment is
done at FSAC and/or you may be referred to a urologist
specializing in male infertility.
PESA and TESA
Percutaneous Epidydimal
Sperm Aspiration (PESA) and Testicular Sperm Aspiration (TESA)
are indicated in some cases of male infertility. These
simple procedures, which are done in the office, allow the
physician to extract sperm directly from a men's testicle or
epidydimal area using a fine needle and gentle
aspiration. Local anesthesia is used for these
procedures.
